Mental Health Services in Mayo – It is estimated that one in four of us will experience some mental health problems in our lifetime, from a low period, to more serious depression, to a small number who will experience severe mental health problems. If you feel persistently sad, have trouble sleeping or experience unexplained aches and pains, you should visit your GP for some advice. Most people are treated by the GP alone, unless more support, for example, therapy services, is required, in which case you may be referred to some of the following day and hospital services.

The HSE Mental Health Services team in County Mayo includes a Consultant Psychiatrist, Junior Doctors, Community Nursing Staff, Addiction Counsellors, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and a range of support staff. There are five sector teams, each serving a population of approximately 20,000 and providing locally based community services through a network of Outpatient Clinics, Day Centres, Day Hospitals and Treatment Centres.

This community based day care unit offers a range of interventions to people who have mental health issues and live in the local community. Out-Patient Clinics are held each Wednesday. Referrals are from GPs to the multidisciplinary team. The service user will then be seen by the appropriate discipline professional / and a care plan is drawn up to meet their individual needs. Nursing staff provide an assessment on a 1:1 and group basis, also psycho-education and supportive counselling in a safe and confidential environment. Other professionals on the team include doctors, clinical psychologist, addiction counsellors, cognitive behaviour therapist, artists, social worker and occupational therapist. Our philosophy of care is to assist individuals, families and the community to avail of the best possible standard of care. Service users are encouraged and enabled to identify coping strategies to promote their self esteem, independence and maximise their quality of life.
